Old Portsmouth Views

This area of Portsmouth has been in the forefront of Portsmouth's History. The Round Tower has seen Royal Navy ships pass its walls on their way to make history. Kings and Queens of England Sailors, Soldiers, Politicians, Settlers for the North Americas and Prisoners have all passed this way.

Press Gangs would haunt this area to search for their next victim. Today the area is used by Sunbathers, Dog Walkers, Fishermen and tourists.

It is unfortunate that the less educated have been known to jump from the walls thrill seeking  damaging themselves with a broken back or neck jumping into the shallow water or landing on rocks.

In the sixties when the local power station pumped warm water into the area it attracted shoals of bass all smallish but ended in the killing of small bass by the local fisherman. This area has also been the victim of the parking meter which restricts any car visitors stay.

Ghosts of Old Portsmouth

The Ghost of James Hill or Jack Painter is said to haunt the streets of old Portsmouth. He attempted to burn down the dockyard in 1776 for which he was hanged. His ghost is said to be seen walking the area of old Portsmouth dragging chains behind him.

Fresh Fish can be Purchased at a local fishmonger at the Quay

There are many good public houses in this area away from the party revelers and with a sea view.

Part of  the city walls of Portsmouth.
Nelson trod his last steps on land here. His walk began at the George Hotel in the High Street through to the Sally Port - a narrow passage which lead through the Redoubt wall straight out onto the beach where his boats were waiting to row him to HMS Victory.

John Felton (c. 1595 - 28 October 1628) was a lieutenant in the English army who stabbed George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham to death in Portsmouth on 23 August 1628.
Felton had been wounded in the duke's disastrously managed military expedition of 1627 against the French at La Rochelle and he held a personal grudge against his victim who, he believed, had corruptly withheld some of his pay and deprived him advancement.
Buckingham was hugely unpopular in the land for the national disgrace of defeat by the French although, with the help of the king, Charles I, he had avoided legal moves against him by Parliament for corruption and incompetence. Shortly after the murder Felton presented himself  before the crowd that had gathered and, expecting to be well received, announced his guilt. He was immediately arrested and taken before magistrates, who sent him to London for interrogation.
The privy council attempted to have Felton questioned under torture on the rack, but the judges resisted, unanimously declaring its use to be contrary to the laws of England. While awaiting trial his actions were widely celebrated in poems and pamphlets, but the process of law took its course and he was hanged at Tyburn on 28 October 1628. In a miscalculation by authorities, his body was sent back to Portsmouth for exhibition where, rather than becoming a lesson in disgrace, it was made an object of veneration.
